PDA as a remote control

I heard that you could set up and use the pocket PCs as a universal remote for all of you media components and was woundering if anyone had some info here about using PDAs for this.. I am going to go do a google and look on the company web site now...
I have a Visor that is not doing anything.. and my dog eat my Onkyo remote...
txs

Yes, it is possible. I don't know about what software is availalbe on the visor/palm platform to do it though. The pocketpc uses nevo. I think there website is www.mynevo.com

I tried some software for my Dell Axim (Pocket PC). The concept sounds cool. The reality was not. The range of the PDA is far shorter than the average remote, so you have to be rather close to the TV.

Also, with the infinite combinations of TV brand, DVD Player brand, Stereo brand and Cable Box, it's hard to find software that will work with all of your components. I was able to change channels on the TV, for example, but not turn it on or off???

At this point, I would fine the PDA Remote in the same category as Voice Recognition -- a great idea, but not really practical yet.

My pocketpc has about the same range as my remote control for my tv.

With nevo if you know the manufacturer code you get most if not all functions for your tv. I'm sure individual results are going to vary, and you have to keep nevo up to date which is sorta a hassle.

Or, you can get yourself one of those universal remotes.

I'm not familiar with the 'Visor' PDA and the OS and version of such but if your running the Palm OS 3.0 or earlier Omniremote has a free download of there Version 1.17 program. This is for the older Palm OS.

From the site;

OmniRemote v1.171 Supported Hardware
OmniRemote v1.171 supports "older" PalmOS hardware such as:

PalmPilot Personal
PalmPilot Professional
All Pilot models with an OS3.0 Upgrade Card
Palm III, IIIe, IIIe SE, IIIx, IIIxe, IIIc, V, Vx, VII
Some versions of the Palm VIIx
Handspring Visor Basic, Edge, Platinum, Prism, Pro, Neo
IBM Workpad 20x, 30x, c3, 50u, 50J
Symbol SPT1500, SPT1700, SPT1700-2D
TRG Pro

Omniremote Version 1.171

WB

EDIT, BTW, I have not tried this software as my PDA has the Palm 4.whaterever version. However, I would like to know how the OmniRemote app works out though. While the linked app is free the 'Pro' app (for newer Palm OS's) is $30 US. Maybe you could post back your exp. if you try the app.

i used the one jman posted on my toshiba e355

it worked pretty good but there was a couple times where I had to press it a few times and the angle needs to be more precise than a regular remote but it was great fun turning on the tv in the middle of class

From what i've read the software will work with any PDA with Palm OS 3 or earlier. You can buy 'Modules' for a PDA that is not equipped with IR. Since the OS on my palm is 4. I never did anymore research into the whole "PDA as a HT Remote" thing.
I wanted to try the app before laying out the $30.00 for it.
