Outdoors Hard drive keeps shutting off!

OK...

I got a new PSU because the old one pooped on me. Now, after installing the new one and hooking everything back up, I can hear my hard drive(s) shutting on and off. I'm sure it's something with the power connector or splitter, but it's really annoying. It also causes my system to freeze up.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? If so, what was your solution.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the old PSU didn't damage the hard drive? Make sure your power connectors are SECURE.

May be unrelated to the new PSU.

When my drive did that it was dying.

In a different thread you mentioned "taking it in" and getting a better, new PS. Did they install the PS?

What do you mean by hearing your HDD? Is it a loud clicking sound?

Yes they did install the PS.

When a hard drive turns off, you can here it click and then spin down until it stops. You most often here this when shutting down or going into to sleep mode.

I hope it's the power connectors. If the hard drive is damaged, they had better give me a new one for giving me a faulty power supply. I doubt they will though.

Also, I first noticed this last night. I reached my hand inside the puter to see how hot the video card was. As soon as my hand went inside and disturbed the power cables, it shut off and on again. But, this morning, it was doing it all by itself. I tried jittering the power cables around and pushing them together and what not but with no success.

I can't tell if it's the primary, slave, or both, though. The primary has it's own power connector, but the other connector on that chain is split between the slave and my video card.

It's always one thing after another...

The PS was obviously under warranty. I'd try and get the HDD covered as well (make sure to explain the HDD was not an issue before, and the wires were loose on the freshly-installed PS).

I've never had a HDD make new, weird noises that wasn't in the final death throes...

It's not a new or strange noise. It's just the sound of it turning off.

I'll try and use a different splitter/power connecter setup tonight. If that doesn't work, Milwaukee PC has some 'splaning to do.

Overall, I've been happy with their service, though. They've given me a lot of free stuff. That's a good way to create customer loyalty (I know I'll never go to Best Buy again for a variety of reasons).

BTW, has you tried connecting the hard drive into another molex connector? It could be a bad molex connector.
