Talk Odd cord on power supply

Hi all,

Just a quick question. I built myself a new system today, and the case i purchased for it had your run of the mill power supply included inside of it. I noticed the power supply had 1 connector that looked like the old at style connectors that you used to plug into a AT motherboard. I was thinking, hmm, could this work on both at and atx boards??? Only problem is, there is only one of those connectors, not 2, so it cant be a at motherboard connector, can it??? I was thinking maybe it was a 12 volt source for some other use.. sort of the like the small cord i plugged into my P4 board to give it it's 12 volts.

please inform me what this cord is for

Thanks!

ahh, I have seen them before also..not sure what it is for.

But if you have no matching plug on the motherboard you dont need it....I usually fold em back and wrap em with a rubberband.

It will usually say p9 on it but almost no motherboard uses them anymore
only some motherboard, usually socket 370, which needs more power would draw power from P9 connecter. However in P4 motherboards there is new connecter for 12v and they don
t need them unless they need more 3.3vs

Thank you for all the responses

John, thats what i did/do too, tie em back with black twist ties or rubber bands. Recently I have been using small black zip ties. They look great and work even better.

Anyhow, at least i know what it is now! For a minute there, I thought somebody forgot to add an extra AT connector to the power supply! lol..

that connector is not the p9 connector that your thinking of.

it is a 12 supply for the cpu, some atx motherboards do not have the 12 volt socket for the cpu and that is a auxurally one that would connect to the motherboard next to the atx 20 pin power connector, some motherboards need it some don't.
