compaq presario 17XL265 Memory upgrade ?

Hi all..

My friend Jackie wants to upgrade the mem in her Presario Notebook. it's a 17XL265, and it takes PC100 SODIMMs no larger than 256 MB. (it has 2 slots)

My ? is this - where can i find memory that will definitely work cheaply? I went to pricewatch, and there seems to be a disparity. Some places list memory compatible with model numbers, others list memory that says compatible with some compaq models, and yet others just tell the specs of the RAM.

I've heard that Compaq stuff tends to be kinda proprietary, so i don't want to steer her wrong and have her end up getting the wrong stuff. So can i use the generic stuff - anyone have any luck?
