IBM or Western Digital
What do you consider a better HD. I have a IBM and my sister has a Western Digital. She has had a ton of problems however she does a lot more internet and downloading then I do. Her HD now keeps shutting down for now reason. I tried putting it in my computer and installing 98 on it but then my computer shut down 3 times in a row and on got to the screen that says boot from hard drive or cd rom.
Is there a difference? IF so how much? IE 2x better, 10xs better.
Thanks,
Naz

IBM used to be one of the best...then they had some bad batches..and I dont think they even make hard drives anymore.
So the question is sort of moot.

IBM is now Fujitsu. Same thing.
I'd say WD though.

ibm sold their HD division to Hitachi.
in any event, i think WD makes the better drive.

I'd agree...Western Digital was my choice for my last drive...although I had bought 4 of the 75GXP "Deathstars" and years later they still work great...I was still leary about buying any other IBM drives. I've had my Western Digital 120 GB drive for almost a year now...no problems.

Western Digital, in my opinion, makes some of the worst ATA drives. They have very poor quality control, on top of old designs and cheap construction.

I didn't know about IBM selling out. I've had mine for about 3 years and have had no problem once so ever. My sister has a WD 60 Gig. It shuts down all the time. So she told me to take it home and see what I could do with it. I took out my IBM and put her's in. Then I started having problems, my computer kept shutting down. So I put my hd in and had no more problems. What would cause the WD to do this. Is their some kind of utility I can use? Thanks for any suggestions.

If it was an option then I would definetely go for a Maxtor. Between those two, Western Digital. Why? Because IBM hard drive used to be great, but nowadays they fail to beat the other brands such as Seagate, Western Digital, and Maxtor.
