Systems Water in my laptop... desperate need for help

Hello everyone

Last friday night some drops of water spilled on the back of my laptop (where the surge and the usb ports are) and since then it doesn't turn on anymore. I was working with the battery, so it wasn't plugged. The only signs of life it currently has are the power light and the cd-rom light that get lit for a sec and then turn dead again.

The laptop is an Acer 1314LC, with only a few months of life. The warranty doesn't cover this kind of accident, so I am wondering if there is any "procedure" to do to let it dry, or at least to understand if it needs time or repairing (before giving it to an assistance point that gets lots of money only to take a look at it!!!).

I have read somewhere that it may need some days to get dry, is it true? Should I wait or there is no hope?

I would really appreciate if anyone could help me!!!

Thanks a lot

Francesco

keep it in a warm, dry place for 2 or three days and try again.

Yes as paul said. Don't touch it for a few days, keep it warm - don't melt it or put in in the oven!

that's what I am doing, except for plugging it once or twice a day to try if it works again...

Is there a way to backup what I have on the hard disk and then to cancel it, in case I have to take the laptop to a lab to be fixed?

most laptop you can pull out the hard drive on the side

get something like this

and get on a machine and grab what you need.

Wish they'd make those adapters a tad more strong... I think I've broken at least four of those (the cables going to the 12volt power connector fall off).

This is not a good idea. If it was/is still wet while you're turning it on, that is all it'll need to short out. Let it dry out completely first.

Also, familiarize yourself with the term,"I don't have any idea what you're talking about, it just quit on me" when speaking to the Acer people. Your conscience may vary.

I once spilled a drink on my laptop keyboard in a drunken stupor. It still worked, but when I brought it in from the screen being cracked by some idiot, the guy cleaned it and charged me an extra $200.
