I heard somewhere (sorry I can't be more specific) that the V.92 standard is the fastest means of transmitting data via phone lines...it uses advanced compression allowing faster speeds. most modern modems (built within the last 3 or so years) support the V.92 standard, but in my experience with AOL, that isp does not.
I feel your pain. I recently moved home from college, where I enjoyed one of three T1's servicing my campus to 56k dialup.
the average 56k modem will connect at 31.6k and no faster. if you want really fast connection speeds, try only loading one web page at a time, and waiting until nighttime to listen to your streaming music, etc. it's almost 4am here, and I'm listening to
Digitally Imported Radio with minimum interference (buffering), prolly due to the low server load at this time.
a download manager will also help you dl (download) programs and files faster...by breaking up the load to many different servers and dl'ing different parts of the file, then piecing them together.
also, a short phone cable is better than a long one, and getting a line-noise reducer (looks like a circular magnet, and it snaps on the cable) might help with line noise.
gl (good luck) and report back if you do get your speeds up!
