Not enough memory

I recently reinstalled Win 98. Everything seemed to work OK but when I click IE I get a message that I cannot do that because I don't have enough memory. I have 64MB ram and it is 78% free. I want to hook the 98 back to my network but I cannot do it without getting on the internet. Is there anything I can do

add more ram?? lol

What all do you have running at startup??

A fresh install of w98se usually has like 95% free resources

run msconfig and see what all you have listed under 'startup'

turn off everything that is not vital...like "msn messenger" etc

Also some stuff like msn messenger actually have to be turned off from the system tray...some things need to be right clicked and look for "options" or "preferences" and then set them NOT to start at startup.

This is a better program to use than msconfig --> startup control panel It is better because it shows more locations where stuff can be starting etc

Have you tried to use an application like Mozilla or Opera to connect to the internet instead of IE?

not enough memory

Thanks for the replies but I am still having problems. I went to msconfig and deleted all running programs at startup and still get the same message, I can't get the other program without IE. Any other ideas. My memory on 98 is 83% free.

Get more ram. All those problems you are now having will go away. By adding more ram, you won't have to face future memory problems. 64MG is a drop in the bucket. Try to double it if nothing else.

Simply not true. I for one have run 98 on 32mb RAM very well for all things including internet, networking, DOS games, etc. Also run XP on 64 mb !
There may be an underlying problem. It is possible that you may have one or more applications that are consuming resources and even when shut down they do not release and allow the system to utilize them properly.
Adding more memory will certainly make your system significantly faster, is an inexpensive upgrade, allow for more applications to be run simultainously, but doesn't explain your problem or "fix it".
There are programs out there that can help with memory problems (they wil either fix or show cause of problem)

I'm with excuzzzeme. While more memory would certainly be nice, I think the problem is something else too. IE should function fine with only 64mb. If you are running IE 5.5 or newer, you may start by trying to repair the install. It might not fix it, but it's easy to try
