XP Slow network pear to pear connect

I am using Windows XP Pro with two types of networks running on the same network card. The office network is Novell 4.1 and runs IPX/SPX protocol using Novell’s Client 32. Our Internet and PC to PC connection runs on the same network wiring and cards using TCPIP. All of the other machines in the office are running Windows 98SE.

When ever I try to look at another work station’s drive via My Network Places in XP it takes several minutes to populate the tree. The Windows 98SE machines connect to themselves or the XP machine almost immediately. This problem is only visible when connecting from the XP machine to any other PC on the internal network.

I have made sure that IPX/SPX is not bound to File & Printer Sharing or Client for Microsoft Networks. Only the Novel l Client for Windows is bound to IPX/SPX. The Provider Order is set to Netware Services first and Microsoft Windows Network second. I have IEEE 802.1x authentication turned off and I have tried Use Simple File Sharing both on and off.

Does anyone have any ideas that could help?

Thanks, those were interesting sites. I checked my version of the DLL file that Microsoft mentions and the one I have is newer. I do have all the latest updates in XP.

The SS64 site talks about eliminating all of the Network Shortcuts in My Network Places and gives a registry key to keep them from repopulating. I did this and saw a small improvement in speed. It still takes at least 15 seconds after I click on a Computer’s Name in View Workgroup Computers until I see Drive C and another 15 seconds or more after I click Drive C before I see File Names. This was all done with very minimal network activity from others.

My Network Places never did repopulate any of the connections I made. I added the Registry Key anyway, but saw nothing different. I hope they were referring to Binary Value. The particular Key they reference (NoRecentDocsNetHood) was not present and I had to create it.

Also just for giggles I created a shortcut to explorer and specified one of the Network Computers for it to start in. When I load Explorer from this shortcut it will take a minute or so to respond.

Do you have any other ideas?

ARe all these machines running 100 speed or 10 speed? or combination? If combination, they have to negotiate speed.

I used to run the Netware client 32 and I remember that having a huge impact on network communications. The last client I used (maybe 4.83) needed some additional patches to allow quick network browsing to MS shared resources. So I recommend getting the most recent Novell Client and related patches.

Speed up network (LAN) browsing in Win2K/XP
Open the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE)

Rename the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Explorer
\RemoteComputer
\Namespace
\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

For example, you can rename it to:

DISABLED {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

This change prevents the browsing computer from checking for scheduled tasks on the remote machine before connecting, which is apparently the reason for the slowness.

You can check this Knowledge Base article for further reference:

Hey Steve, that got me half way there.

I performed that registry hack. Now when I click on View Workgroup Computers in My Network Places and then click on one of the machines listed the response of showing the shared drives is almost instantaneous. This used to take a minute or two before I would see the shared drives listed.

However when I click on a shared drive there is still a delay of a minute or so before I see file names appear. Would this be related to what I was reading on the SS64 site where they say that all of the file icons from the remote location are being read? I did perform the SS64 registry hack of
“HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Po licies\Explorer\NoRecentDocsNetHood to 1” to try to eliminate the reading of the icons. I had to create the key “NoRecentDocsNetHood” because it did not already exist. I made the new key a Binary Value and entered 01. Is this a mistake?

What kind of pears are they? Bartlett pears support IPX but Bosc and Comice pears only support TCP/IP. Anjou pears are famous for being the only pears to support the AppleTalk protocol.
