Major Win 2K Pro problems
Hi,
I seem to have a developed a major problem with the OS on my Desktop machine.
It has run flawlessley since I built it last September. I ran a full AV Scan on Saturday. The only thing I have changed recently was yesterday when I was trying to get ICS going with AOL Dialup I added a few new components to the Windows folder of the Win 2k CD (networking things).
Following reading and commenting on another thread here this morning about the lack of function of Avtars I thought I would see if a restart got mine up and going again as they were displaying correctly on my Laptop but not the other one.
I restarted and it all appeared normal hust when I go to start anything the splash screen for that appears and then it all freezes after a couple of seconds. If I go to Task Manager there are no programs shown running in the Applications window I have to go through the Process Window and pick off the ones I want to stop ( even though they don't show up as running).
Windows Explorer just sits and does that searching thing and never shows anything.
I tried to restart again via the Start Button and restart command. All the Icons on the screen vanished along with most of what was in the Sys Tray and the machine just hung.
A three fingered salute and shut down command got a load of windows coming up saying the various functions were ending. It has now stopped on one that is Not responding it's called NMain.exe. Does anyone know what that or another one called CCapp.exe is all about and can anyone tell me how to get this damn thing up and running again.
If I do a restart with the button on the front it gets up to the normal startup deal but still jams up when I ask it to do anything. When it restarts I can't find it over the Network either. (It's joined to the machine I am using now with a crossover cable)
Cheers

Since posting this I thought about it a bit and being pretty much a novice with Win 2K thought I would just keep fiddling about.(I took the precaution when building this machine to have the OS on its own partition so if I knackered it fully I could do a format and reinstall without a total catastrophie) I got it restarted in Safe Mode and went to the Control Panel then un selected the things I had added yesterday. It started and ran fine after that. I gues there must have beena conflict somewhere along the line.
The things I added yesterday and have now unselected are Simple Network Management Protocol,RIP Listener and Simple TCP/IP Services.
Cheers
