Redhat help

i was trying to partion the drive for redhat but it doesn't work. i have 15gb free out of a 40, and xp already on 1 partition. the promblem lies in the root thing and which file format should i use? thx for the help

Which version of RedHat? Did you tell the installer to automatically partition using the free space, or is that free space actually a DOS partition?

i tried automatic partion but it said i had to define the root something............using redhat 9 and i went through the graphical option not the text

Are you sure it wasn't talking about the bootloader? It's been a while since I installed RedHat on anything.

Also, I'm going to move this thread to the Linux and Unix forum.

no it wanted to define the root or something it was lyk this

etc........ more that cant remeber but thats what i know thx

At a minimum you need a /boot and / partition. If you created them manually and did not include / then it will puke.

Did you use the "automatically partition" option, or did you use the "partition with disk druid" option?

Most people just use ext3 for both / and /boot with a swap partition double memory size.

So you might make:
swap (512mb for a system with 256mb of ram)
/boot (50-100mb, ext3)
/ (fill the rest of the space, ext3)

That's how I set mine anyhow.
