Problems after overheated processor

My xp1900 got really hot and windows shut itself down. I think the fan quit working or something. Anyway I grabbed to heatsink to feel it and got a pretty good burn on my finger. I let it cool and restarted. Windows was acting kinda funny so I decided to do a fresh install. The most noticeable problem is IE keeps getting errors and having to restart. It's locked up a couple times running Ad-aware. This instability is driving me crazy. Could the processor be partly screwed up? It was a fresh Win2000 install with all the updates.

Anyone?

Thanks
Dave

Sounds like your poor CPU suffered some heat stroke. Do you have a local shop where you can take it and have it tested?

I think it only taks a few seconds for it to be damaged

Well I am really puzzled now. Put a 750 duron in to test and it bsod me fairly quickly. Wondering now if my motherboard got screwed up when the processor overheated. The bsod says something about a kernal error or something.

Maybe the fresh install was hosed by the damaged CPU.

Never thought of that. I've been wanting to upgrade...looks like the time has arrived. It's been my work horse for long time now.
