Read Only Folder

How do I get rid of the "read only" attribute as regards a folders attributes? I go to a folder on my desktop and then properties and uncheck the read only box, go to apply and then okay. When I return to this box, the read only box is checked again but somewhat greyed out. Went to cmd.exe and tried to change a folders attributes but no luck.

read only

Every folder on my desktop is read only, box checked but slightly greyed out. Maybe they have been this for awhile and I never noticed.

That means that some of the items in it are read only. You should be able to uncheck it and apply.

what exactly does read only do? Doesn't it just make it so it can't be modified?

Correct. It is normally used to keep people from messin where they shouldnt be messin. Another common reason is a file copied from a CD, since all files on CDs are marked read-only.

uncheck

The "read-only" box is checked and slightly greyed out-
you can uncheck it and hit apply but when you re-open it is checked again-i have never seen this "faded out" box-
wished i could show it to you-the entire windows explorer is that way-somehow or other i put a default on the system-
