How do you clean CDs and/or DVDs?

Fellow Members:

I have bought many CDs and DVDs off of eBay or signed them out from the local library. I sometimes get a dirty one that I have to pop out and clean as the smudges or dirt causes it to stop playing.

I use luke warm water on a soft cloth. Is there something better to use?

What do you use to clean CD and/or DVDs?

Thx!

Brangwen

I use warm water, a drop of dish liquid, rup lightly with my finger tips, rinse, and dry it by patting it on my t-shirt.

In order for this to work you must be wearing a t-shirt for the drying method.

I throw them in the dish water in the kitchen sink. Dry with a soft cloth.

If they have a smudge, I just wipe em with my shirt.

You can "clean" dirty CDs? I usually just keep 'em away from the kids...

Absolute best thing you can use is a $5-$6 bottle of ClearKote from Blockbuster... cleans and fills in the light scratches at same time .... went to GoodWill and picked up a silk shirt or two and use them to buff the CD/DVD.
in cases where there are scratches that it wont take care of ... I use a large homemade chamois "wheel" I made and the slowest setting on my Dremel with a mild grit plastic polishing agent to buff them out and then finish with the ClearKote.

I use normal rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl or ethanol w/ no other additives) and the most lint-free wipe I have handy - coffee filters or lens tissues work well. Just be careful not to get it on the label side. Might affect the varnish coating on that side... You are supposed to wipe in radial motions - not circular or parallel with the circumference.
