Outlook problem re-downloading duplicate emails

Hey Folks,

I recently paid for pop acces to my yahoo account, been using it for to long to change it.

I recently set up Outlook 2003 as my PIM. I have set it not to delete from the server unless i delete it from outlook as I want to be able to access my email from different os's and access them still from the net. Besides as I get a minimum of 25mb of email space with the pop access there is no reason to keep it empty.

My problem is this. I recently reinstalled XP and Outlook and restored my pst file and now when I click on send/recieve it wants to download the 1120 odd emails that it has already in its inbox. It took me a long time to sort out the emails the first time. Is there any way I can get outlook to realise that it has already downloaded them? Can it compare the headers or something?

This happens to my wife who's using Outlook to download mail from her school's email server. She's using POP also, and is leaving a copy on the server.

As far as I've been able to tell, Outlook uses a certain time stamp to see if a mail had been previously downloaded. Apparently some email servers time stamp emails in a way that makes Outlook think they're new mail, so it downloads them again. It's a rare occasion with her, though.

I'm thinking whenever the server has a serious issue and needs to be rebooted, the time stamps get re-written and Outlook does its thing. I could be wrong, though.

If your right M_Six and its possible that outlook will want to download these emails againg from time to time even if i do not reinstall that could be a BIG problem as the number of emails aint getting any smaller. 1200 and rising.

I had a similar problem where Outlook all of a sudden wasn't deleteing my mail and kept re-downloading messages over and over again....ended up to be a bad router. I plugged directly into my cable modem and my problem was gone. So purchased a new router and all is well. May be something to check.
