Outdoors Explorer 100% CPU with Video files

Greetings all.
When I open a folder which contains video files Explorer hoggs 100% of the CPU. You can hear the HDD spinning away. I had this problem before and was told to alter a value within the registry accociated with video files and I cannot for the life of me find that solution. Any help on this matter will be greatly appreaciated.
Kind regards.
Rad

Yo zipper440,

Great question, and welcome to Techimo!

I have exactly the same problem (XP Pro) only it gets to a point where Explorer gives the "Encountered errors/need to shut down" and it does. I've tried Steve's fix (THX) which improves the time before getting the error message, but eventually yields the same result (30 seconds instead of 6 seconds). There are a bunch of thumbnails, so I'm wondering is there some Explorer cache I could raise the limit of space used, so as to not encounter these Explorer shutdowns? When not on thumbnail view, folder stays open w/o incident.

Suggestions?

Here's the explorer "hidden" cache file. I zap it everytime I'm close to it.

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

Thanks Leftcoast and Steve for your suggestions. Tried them and guess what?.... still the same. I am at a loss as to what I was told to do 6 months ago regarding the registry setting. I do a lot of video editing and now it is taking 4 times longer to do things. I await further responses with bated breath. Thanks again.
Rad.

Send a message via Yahoo to muno
It's because wxp previews the video files.

You can disable it with the following trick ->

Thanks Muno for your reply. I have looked at the registry and I do not have that value. I was told to delete it in a previous response last week. I am at a loss now. Any more suggestions would be most appreaciated. Kind regards.

Hmmmm, think is the same tweak as above..but it's the 1 that I used and had no more problems:

1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
