FSB Question

i always match up the FSB on the CPU and RAM, but i have an oppotunity to get PC3200 (400 mhz) with a 333 FSB cpu

with this work ok or should i underclock the memory?

There is no point in getting PC3200 ram unless you have a board that supports 400mhz bus. If you have a 333mhz board than PC2700 ram is the fastest that it will take full advantage of. The PC3200 would work ok but it would run at PC2700.

It will give you an advantage if you are overclocking past 400mhz DDR speed with your CPU or if you plan to upgrade to a 400mhz FSB Athlon anytime soon....as elroy said it will only work if your board actually supports PC3200...

Its best to get really nice ram then you don't ever have to worry bout it. if you decided to overclock which you can probably hit 200mhz fsb on your cpu even if your board doesn't officially support it.

you could run it at fsb+66 but from my experiance it runs more stable if you were to underclock it to pc2700 speeds

The advantage of getting PC3200 even if it will be running at PC2700 speeds is that you'd be able to run some very aggressive timings on it.

so pc3200 RAM will have better timings at pc 2700 speed as opposed to regular pc2700

Everything else being equal, then yes. What I mean by that is that a PC3200 Corsair XMS DIMM running at PC2700 speeds can have tighter timings than a PC2700 Corsair XMS DIMM.

However, a generic PC3200 DIMM running at PC2700 speeds might not necessarily support tighter timings than a Corsair XMS PC2700 DIMM.

Hope that makes sense.
