Windows 98 to XP Home

Anyone know if it's possible to upgrade Windows 98 to Windows XP Home using the Full edition and not the upgrade edition of Windows XP Home? I'm trying to upgrade a friend's box, but I don't have Home upgrade, only Home full with a new license. I tried running setup from within Win98 but it only offered clean install as an option, no upgrade.

It is my understanding that this is possible with the retail full edition but not with the OEM full edition.

That said, there are ways to do an upgrade with an OEM full version. I've never done it but I saw it while Googleing for some other info.

I've tried two versions of Windows XP Home, one OEM Full Version and one retail Full Version, and neither one offers the upgrade option in Windows 98 SE. For grins, I tried Windows XP Professional, and that DOES offer the upgrade option from Win98 to XP Pro, but I don't have a license for it and I'd rather not have to get one since I have one for home.

I checked many many sites... and only Windows XP Home Upgrade Edition will allow you to upgrade from windows 98 or 98 SE to Windows XP Home.

All the sites suggest you do a clean install anyways as many of the drivers/software etc are not compatible with Windows XP (well we know that duh.. )...

Personally Scott I would backup the system and do a clean install of Windows XP... better in the long run.

Sixpac_XP is correct, the full retail box version of WinXP Professional offers an upgrade path for Win9x, however WinXP Home does not. There should be a Microsoft FAQ concerning this topic from around 2001.

BTW, I will be glad to ship you a copy of Mandrake instead.

Gee, RobRich , I've always wanted to upgrade a Win98 to XP Home, too.

Can you ship me a Mandrake 9.2, too ?

hmm..Actually I think I have a Drake from a Brit mag.

Howsabout installing it for me ?

How about an upgrade for a Win 95 486 Lappy --with 8 Mbs of Ram.

This is the Lappy that explains why Canon no longer makes them !

Hey, forgettabout installing the 'Mandrake Drive (?)', the one-CD Knoppix-like wonder. No CD-ROM

Actually Scott , your friend is in luck. Getting rid of all the crap residue from Win 98 with a clean install will probably do him wonders...force some housecleaning as what is backup to move !

DOOOOOOOOOOOOG
