Start up sending monitor into "sleep mode"

OK heres what happened to me yesterday:

Installed a new DVD-R. Started up my box and all looked fine. After the Windows start up screen, the monitor just goes into "sleep" but the computer keeps running. I pulled the DVD-R back out and the same thing keeps happening. I noticed the fan isn't running on my Video Card anymore. All items all fairly new:

ABIT NF7-S
AMD 2500+
PNY GeForce 5600+

The PSU is the one that came with the case, 350W included with Aspire Dreamer case from NewEgg.

Any thoughts what might be wrong? Thanks in advance!

Kinda funny that the video card isnt running... is the extra power cable plugged into it? IF it is i would suggest cleaning the socket and reseating it. It sounds like a graphics problem if the monitor isnt turning itself on.

yeah i pulled the card out and cleaned everything. put it back in and same thing. When it starts up the fan jumps like it wants to run but it never gets going. Could it be the power supply?

Sounds like your video card is getting to hot without the fan running. Pull it out and see if you can spin the fan freely and that it hasn't seized up. make sure that the fan's power wires are plugged onto the video card. Plug it back in.. and see if the fan spins. I am not sure of the 5600 cards.. but it might need a power connector plugged into the end of the video card to run the fan.

Sounds like you have a bad fan on the video card.

It needs the power connector in the end of the card so it can run at full clock speeds - it SHOULD be fine without it but i highly recommend keeps it in.
Anyways i reckon it could be PSU or graphics fan.

is it possible for it to heat up that quickly and just shut down? can the fan itself be replaced or do i have to warranty the whole card? thanks for your help everyone.

Think the card has a 5 year warranty.

I swear I had something like that happen recently. Turned out to be related to ram. ( I've gotta get my story straight)

It was an sdram board, a low$ Syntax, everything is soldered on, mini-ATX. It finally would boot and I went right into the bios. Bad chars in the display.

I swapped the ram for a different stick and it booted fine. I added the original stick in the second slot and it still booted fine.

Maybe swapping the ram around or swapping it for another stick will do something for you. This one was good for 133 but I used a stick of 100.
