Systems Open folder causes explorer crash

I have a folder on my hard drive that contains alot of movie files (svcd and the like), when this folder opens the thumbnail of the files will load and then explorer will crash and then reload without the folder reloading. This will happen with a few seconds of the folder being opened. Other folders open and close normally except for folders that contain non-windows icons, ie some program icons for install packages will also cause the crash (musicmatch jukebox especially).

This problem has only started to happen in the last day or so and only since I ran the latest windows update but it is happening on a number of computers that have had this upgrade. I have been told that it is a known bug and a registry fix will solve it but as of yet I have found no solution.

This happens on windows xp pro and home.

I have found the solution.
I had a previous installation of the xvid codec and yesturday I installed the k-lite codec pack (which had xvid codecs), it seems that these two would not play nice together.
I could not find a method of uninstalling the xvid I had installed previously so I uninstalled k-lite and reinstalled but unchecked the xvid codecs on install. This has fixed the problem for one of the computers.

kjg... when explorer crashes.. it should pop up a dialog box saying that explorer has crashed.. yada yada.. there should be a button or link where you can view the error message.. can you post that .. maybe that will help in finding a better solution.

Thanks for the replies tazzin but I fixed the problem. It seemed that when the thumbnail loaded it required some input from xvid and my double install (k-lite and xvid) caused some corruption which caused explorer to crash and restart.
It was a strange problem cos after the crash there was no error message and the event logs didnt log any errors, but hopefully it will trouble me no more.
