New Zealand Tech Question

Hi There folks,

I know we got a couple of new zealandars around heres somewheres so hoping ya'll can help me out here or perhaps someone else familar with international protocals for dialup connections.

My folks are leaving for new zealand in 3 weeks and they use AOL. (please no aol bashers please because if you bash im gonna report plain and simple.)

My quesiton is what is the standard protocal for using aol dialup when they are USA residence and they are outside of thier country?

Is there extra charges on this or is aol internal dial up or would they need to upgrade thier exisiting service to include international dialing up or what?

What do they need to do to the dial up properties to make thier computer work?

Thanks for help on this issue.

Neo

basically wouldnt it be a matter of seeing if AOL has local dialup numbers for NZ?

If not they are looking at long distance charges

Hi,

I am from NZ originally and have used AOL there with no probs.

I have a UK Account. When they get there they will just need to create a new location and away they go. Depending upon where they are dialing up from there may be some issues with what you need to dial to get an outside line etc.

The basics of it are, start AOL as usual, at the screen where you see the sign in button select setup at the next screen select Add Location, give it a name and leave the default option for selecting numbers highlighted click next, select your country at the next screen and hit next.

You will see a whole raft of numbers after this all of which say surcharged after them. I would suggest selecting the toll free one and then click next. A few more screens where you can just click next appear and then it's all done. If there are some local variances for access this can be attended to by starting at the sign in screen click on setup again and then on expert setup at the next screen highlight the number you want to alter and click edit. Once the changes have been made click OK and then close on the next screen.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Ya that does help Nodnerb,
Altho one thing confuses me, according to those numbers listed in the link above the toll free one has a surcharge of 24 per hour as versas the local numbers surcharged at 6 per hour. Why such a difference?

The connection setup sounds easy enough, alth im a bit confused on the surcharged issues. I tried calling ther online help and they just gave me the same links as above and wouldn't explain to me about the surcharges and just said to go to aol and use the keyword billing. Sheesh.

I don't run aol so i have no way to access that type of info but i'll give this information and pass it along and also tell them to look at the biling options via their aol.

Hi,

I didn't look at what the surcharges were. If I am somewhere and need to use it I need to use it so it's just one of those things.

If that's Dollars you are quoting then it's about half that in US at the mo.

Here is what ya get when checking out International Connection costs from the UK

There are two ways of accessing AOL from outside the UK:

1. Connect to AOL using a local Internet provider (or cybercafe) - in this case you will incur the charges of the local Internet service in question.

2. Connect to AOL directly, using AOL's network of international access numbers, located in over 100 countries. Use of these numbers carries a communications surcharge of at least £2.50 an hour, depending on the country.

Please note: In both cases you will also be charged your usual AOL online usage charge, according to your AOL price plan (e.g, no charge for AOL Anytime, but 1p per minute for Off-Peak All The Time) For more information on AOL price plans, go to AOL Keyword: Pricing.

For more information about accessing AOL from abroad, go to AOL Keyword: Access Numbers.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers
