Here's my prob
I got this pc to fix from a neighbor
put an el chepo SYNTAX S635MP mainboard
and put in new Maxtor 40 GB HDD
set partition
formatted
rebooted to option boot from CDRom "did so"
Installed Windows 98SE form CDRom

Here's the glitch
When Windows loaded it dose not display a D drive
Creative 52X CDRW
or the E drive generic CDRom
So I can't even load the board drivers for the onboard
vid, audio, lan, etc.

I changed the IDE ribbon removed and rebooted shutdown
reinstalled one at a time reboot "still nothing"

Weird since it worked to load Windows?

Any ideas?

Thanks
sevenal

Here's another twist
When I use the HDD as master and set CDRW as Slave
the D drive is functional "as long as everything is laying out on the table"
As soon as I mount the drives The pc dose not even see the HDD.
Man this is freaky, could i have a grounding issue?

Gday sevenal.
Just something to check.
"As soon as I mount the drives The pc does not even see the HDD."
Can you see the drives in the BIOS?
Certainly sounds like a hardware problem.
Need to inspect everthing carefully.
Could be a flakey mainboard.

Umm. Dunno. *shrugs*

My thought was, that if the bios wont see it, then windows wont either.
Which takes you back to a fundamental hardware prob.
Like you said, it did work the first time.

Gotta love these sort of probs have fun. Rusty.

Check and be sure that your jumpers are set correctly for each drive on each IDE channel.

IMO.. I would have the HD on IDE 0 (master)
and the CD-RW and CD Rom on IDE 1 (master/slave)
you can invert the CD drives depending how the person wants it.

Verify in the BIOS that it sees all the drives.

Go into Windows and see if it sees them.
If not, try using the Add Harware Wizard or Device Manager.

If all else fails.. it could be the MOBO.

Syntax huh... I have a media reader and WUSB dongle from them.. not brave enough yet to try their MOBO's

Iv had THIS EXACT PROBLEM but thankfully its all cleared itself up now. My DVD drive kept disappearing and reappearing and not working. I fixed it by doing......nothing. I left my pc for a couple of days came back and it was working again.

Damn this is a funny world

Well I finally got the drivers loaded with the Rom drive laying on the table.
Then i got the HDD as master and the CDRW as Slave on the same IDE ribbon.
then put the CDRom in on the other IDE alone
But hey It all works.
Oh Ya and that motherboard has that hardwired CPU
VIA Samuel3
1.3 GB
and it cost me $10 after rebate
so what the heck?

Dissappering CD ROM's can sometimes be cured by deleting the IDE driver in windows. This sometimes crashes windows but when you reboot it detects the IDE controller and sets the drives up again.
