they are pretty cheap nowadays

http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/cat/1...ds--USB%20Card

dunno about quality etc but the cards can be had forless than $10...or get a usb2/firewire combo for a bit more.

Dirt cheap

There are good USB cards and there some not so good USB cards. I bought one from a vendor at eBay.. it was new, and didn't work properly. I bought another 2-port USB PCI card from the USB man..and couldn't be happier..

Good price and good (helpful) people.

Well.. I think I would have to say yes. But, I also realize I am not on quite a budget as someone else may be..but the one I bought at eBay, I found out later, that there were a lot of not-so-good USB cards that have been sold in bulk and have found their way to eBay..and other individual places (auctions etc).

I'm sure there are many other cards just as good as the ones the USB man sells. I was referred to the USB man for a good, well performing card that has NEC chips...supposedly one of the best performing chipsets.

I just threw in the USB man for your consideration... you are doing the buying.

to use a usb2.0 pci card, does the motherboard need to be able to supprt usb2.0? or can i stick it in my machine and it'll work perfectly? is this the same as firewire cards too?
Thanks.

yes, even if your mobo doesnt support USB 2.0 and firewire

the card has the USB 2.0 or FireWire chipset on it so its the usb/firewire part of the motherboard pretty much

When I installed USB 2.0 PCI cards in my computers (soon after the cards were available, if I remember correctly), I had fewer issues with cards that had an NEC chipset.
