IP Forwarding?

I have RealVNC installed on a system running Windows 98SE. I have the Java-viewer server thingy enabled, so I can access the system from any other system on the network by going to 192.168.0.3:5800 ...

This is the third system in a three system network. The main PC runs ICS.

I want to be able to access this system via VNC when I'm away from home, so I'm trying to figure out if there's some way I can forward the IP to the main system (192.168.0.1), so that 192.168.0.3:5800 is accessible from the internet.

On 192.168.0.1, running XP Pro - I setup the following service:

However, when I try to utilize it through my browser by going to http://localhost:5800 .. I get your classic DNS error.

Any idea what I have to do to make this work?

Thanks.

Are you behind a router/firewall?
Will need to forward ports there.

It looks like you are trying to use the LAN address. Which would explain why you are getting a DNS error.

You will need to use the WAN (public) IP address if you are trying to reach the host computer anywhere outside your local network.

The system doesn't have it's own public IP address. Only the system serving through ICS does.

Is this not possible, then?

Yes it is possible....And you don't know it, but you are just about there :-)

The machine that is running the VNC server has a private IP address and cannot be directly reached from outside your local network. This is the reason you have forwarded incoming requests on port 5800 to the machine that is listening for requests on that particular port.

In other words, you need to use the public IP address of the system that is running ICS when trying to access it from outside your local network. When this system running ICS sees the incoming request on port 5800 it will forward that request to the computer that is running the VNC server.

That's what I'm doing. The configuration screenshot from the initial post is from the machine running ICS.

So have you tried using the public IP address as jcksrobbins suggested (from outside your LAN)?

Didn't work ?

I would try using the plain vnc-viewer rather than the java-viewer just to verify that your vnc server is indeed working.

If it still won't work this might be worth a look also: http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/cgi-bin/fom...file=1#file_76
