Why not use vsync?

Why do people turn vsync off? I'm always associating with gamers and they do things that just don't make any sense. People say things like "I'm getting 140fps!". So what, who cares? Does your monitor support that? No. The game will actually look better if you're only getting 60fps when your monitor is locked at 60hz. Having a high frame rate causes tearing which looks horrible. Try running a game at 100fps when your monitor is only 60hz; you'll see horizontal lines on the screen.
Even some of the people who know that the monitor is the bottleneck insist on turning vsync off just to get the satisfaction of a higher framerate.

I can understand turning vsync off if your computer cannot get 60fps because it will then restrict down to 30fps. Other than that, it just seems stupid. Am I overlooking a reason to turn it off?

I think mine is off. Just cuz I got a crappy graphics card and turning it off might jack up the fps a little.

Are you saying that if the refresh rate is, say 60hz and the frame rate is, say 100, that is a problem??
If the card is producing 100fps and the monitor is set for 60hz, what happens to the extra frames?

you dont see them. your video card only assumes your monitor can refresh as fast as it's frame rate. there is no problem... just a waste of frames!

You'll also see small blurry horizontal lines on the screen where the monitor is refreshing and the computer has only drawn part of the frame. It's called tearing when that happens.

I run Vsync too. Its not so nice to see graphics messed up or jumping frame rates that = jittery gameing.

BUT at 1024x768 I run 120hz refresh. SO, 100fps doesnt top me out. I need 120 to do that! Heh. 60fps is too low. 85fps just right! Why? Cause 60hz is flickery. 85 isnt. So to match fps to frame rate-well you do the math. Also at 85fps when turning a 360o rotation you see more points between starting to turn and fully turned. That is a big advantage in FPS games. It can be the diff between ducking in time or being sniped. BF (SPECIALLY NAM) is a example. Mohaa also.

Because you get higher 3dmark scores!

My monitor runs at 75hz, and I leave vsync off. I do not notice tearing in most games, and when I do I turn it on.

[Edit] misread previous post...[/edit]

Tearing happens when you get 1/2 (or some fraction) of a frame displayed on your monitor, along with a fraction of the next frame displayed at the same time. With vsynch on, only full frames are displayed, therefore eliminating tearing.

I also run with vsynch on to avoid this.

You guys are saying anything over the refresh rate of the monitor weather it be 85hz or 285hz is a complete waste! In other words, all these video cards that have these super high frame rates that these kids are paying $300 to $400 for are complete overkill? Only to get some ego tripping benchmark score?
