HSF Question....

I have a question about an HSF upgrade...currently at full load my Vantec Aeroflow with AS3 on it cools my CPU to about 33C-37C....I was looking at getting maybe a Thermaltake Subzero 4G, but the price is what's holding me back....it costs around $100....that's kind of high for me for a HSF...anyone know of a really good HSF for a socket A that would maybe drop my temperature down to below 30C atleast...below 25 would be optimal...I am looking to spend no more than around maybe $55-65 shipped...I'm running an Athlon XP 2100+ at 2.2GHz, so I'm doing pretty good for the amount of OC I did, but I don't like it going over 40C and it does that sometimes....so, I'd like some assistance in picking a good HSF for my Socket A CPU, plz...thanks...

Good luck achieving 25°C or even 30°C CPU temp.

Heat sinks' effectiveness is rated in °C/W (degrees Celcius per Watt). The very best air-cooled heat sinks with the most powerful fans can get down to about 0.22 °C/W. What this means is assuming your ambient case temp is 25°C, and your CPU is putting out 75 Watts of thermal energy, the very best a air-cooled HS could hope to achieve is:
0.22°C/W x 75W = 16.5°C over ambient (case) temp, or 25°C + 16.5°C = 41.5°C.

It's pretty common for an overclocked TBred or Barton to put out 90 Watts at 100% CPU output (like when running Prime95 or SETI@Home, many games, etc.). Even if your could keep your case temps at 20°C, if your CPU is pushing 90 W, then the best air-cooled temp you could hope to achieve is about 40°C.

0.22°C/W x 90W = 19.8°C over case temp (20°C + 19.8°C = 39.8°C).

Most of the time, you will not even get that 0.22°C/W efficiency, probably figure about 0.25°C/W to be conservative. There are a lot of coolers that can get you in that range. See article and rankings here.

Good luck on your search.

I don't know how accurate that is...also, I'm wondering if they used AS3 (Artic Silver) on those heatsinks or if they did dry runs...I have heard of people getting their CPU temps down to below 30 using nothing but air cooling with a system temp of around 15C-20C....as for their rating system...I'm thinking that if my Vantec AeroFlow is that low on their rating system, then the Swiftech MCX462-V with the Delta fan (#1 on their ratings) should drop my CPU temps to about 28C-30C easily as long as I keep my system temp around the same general area (21-23C)....we'll see...very informative website however, thanks for the link...

Why are you so concerned about getting such a low temp? Your current temp is probably lower then average. Even in the mid 40's you don't have any problems.

Unless you are breaking above 55C under load, forget about a cooling upgrade for the Athlon. The processor is designed to take such thermal loads with absolutely no problem, and lowering the temperature is not going to affect the performance or lifespan of the chip. Why bother?

jmichna's numbers are pretty close for the bulk of HSF coolers available on the retail market.

The temperatures the reviews attain are often not accurate, especially when people claim their Athlon is running below 30C with air cooling. Most review sites use a motherboard-mounted thermal sensor, and that sensor does little to describe actual core temperatures of the Athlon.

heh, the reason that I want a slightly better cooling system is because I want to push my little ol' athlon 2100+ to around 2.4-2.5 GHz....I know I can get it there, it's just a matter of cooling it a little better....I don't know, we'll see, instead of a new HSF, I might just decide to buy an external AC Unit for the system, so that I do not have to keep the entire house cool, heh...we'll see...thanks for the input all...oh yeah, the reason why I want to boost this one a little more is for two reasons...1. bragging rights and 2. to give me a little more performance until I have the $400 to upgrade to A64 or the prices go down quite a bit....thanks for the input, again...ttyl
