How much to charge for a basic website?

I have been doing websites for a while, and have some skills. While they arnt the magnitude of a professional designer, either were my base costs. $175.00 was my base cost for just the site, (including all graphic design, research, etc) (static page).

I decided to raise my base cost to $300.00, and yesterday was talking to a semi-professional (local) designer, who told me with my skills that I should be charge in the upwards of a grand for a basic static page.

I looked at some of his work, and some of his competitions work, and determined that my skills were just under what theirs were on most of there work, equivellent on some.

I do have a few references, and have decent customer service skills.

Somthing he told me, was not to give a basic page, but to give a cost per page, (100 - 175).

Any comments / suggestions.

I also am hoping to secure a website deal tonight, and have yet to quote them a price.

I will need to write some sort of contract, and from what i read here, 50% initiall collectment is what i want to do?

thanks for your help,

Blaze

Blaze,

You should always base your price on what the client wants, not a "set price". No two projects are ever the same.

If you want to quote a set price, you should dictate exactly what that includes:
  • How many pages?
  • How many photos?
  • Will you scan the protos, or do they need to provide them in a digital format?
  • Are you using a custom design or a template?
  • How many rounds of design revisions do you allow?
  • Are you writing the text for the site, or are they?
  • Do you spell check?
  • Grammar check?

I would guess the industry average is somewhere between $100 and $200 per page for a static web site. So your "average" 5 page site should cost somewhere between $500 and $1,000.

Now, here's the real answer. If you competitors are charging $1,000, you should too -- or darned close to it. Otherwise, you're selling yourself short and you'll never make a living.

Good luck!

I dont design websites for money. But anyhow, I'm not sure about cost per page. How do you determine a page? Some might make a static page for 20 products. Another might make one dynamic page that can show the 20 products separately.

You could check out Rentacoder.com to see what people are paying for different web projects.
