I have a machine running win 98 second edition. Everytime I boot it, an error message comes up that says: explorer.exe created a page fault in module explorer.exe. When I hit ok, nothing happens and I just get the background with no taskbar or anything. There is nothing I can do with the machine. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this error?
it will find "setupx.dll" but just ignore that...anything else it finds you need to restroe from the windows cd...it is fairly self explanatory how to do it.

also you could run "drwatson" from the run box....it will put the little drwatson icon in the system tray by the clock...then try to replicate your problem and see if Dr Waston tells you anything

Unfortunately. I have tried to install windows on top of the existing installation and it did not work. I also restored the registery and had no such luck. I cannot boot in safe mode either.
What brand HDD? Go to their web site and download their utility disk, run the tests and see if you get any errors, more than likely you will have to erase the drive and start from scratch.
If you can boot to the command prompt you may try this little trick.
In the windows directory remove RH attributes from system.dat and rename to system.old
In the root directory remove RH attributes from system.1st file and copy to the windows directory with the name system.dat
Reboot the system and this should think it is a new installation of Win98 and scan for the hardware. any drivers and applications you have on the system will still be intact
I had that very same problem on a friends PC after her daughter loaded some stoopid MnM (the rapper) wallpaper onto their system.. I eventually had to do an fdisk and reinstall W98 after exhausting all other options.
Thanks for all the help, I had to move everything to the second partition and reinstalled windows to get rid of the problem. Fortunately, I didn't have to lose any major files!!
