usb 2.0 and firewire help

hi all
my computer is fairly old and it only has usb1.1
i am thinking about buying one of those usb 2.0 cards, but will i need a motherboard that supports usb 2.0?
also, with firewire, will my motherboard need to be able to support firewire too for it to work? or can i simply buy the firewire card, stick it into my machine and it'll work?
just for those wondering, the reason i am considering getting firewire/usb 2.0 is because i recently bought an ipod mini and want to transfer songs quicker.

I would think you should be fine as the hardware to run them PCMCIA cards is actually in the cards themselfs.

USB 1.1 will transfer songs in about 1.5 seconds a song. USB 2 will transfer songs in about 1 second. You wont notice the difference. How do i know? Because i have a 2.5ghz P4 with USB 2 and a 500mhz Duron and have tried them both.
