msconfig newbie needs help bad

hey people

i ran i search but couldnt find anytthing related to my problem...

i can no longer run msconfig or regedit, EVEN in safemode. i have just formatted completely and installed a fresh copy of winXPhome. it worked the very first time i booted up, but after that, it will only pop up for a second. ive read on the web about the same prob, only for 2000, and everyone says to rename it, reinstall it (dont know how), or do something with a vxd file... but theyre never at all clear on the solution. i need msconfig otherwise my programs all load at the beginning, and some dont give me the option to not do that. Microsoft doesnt offer jack. ive installed all new updates, what can i do???

thanks

Brandon

//edit:
According to site linked from there (http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ToolsQuit.htm), it's because of some viruses.

Try running housecall. http://housecall.trendmicro.com

I think you should wipe the HDD with an app like killdisk, which will write zeros to all sectors of your drive. Just formatting is not enough; some viruses and corrupted windows files will reinstall upon you next "fresh" install.

No.

It looks like a virus hanging around from the last "fresh" install. Wipe the drive, and truly reinstall XP. Give your system a fresh start.
