What exactly can DVI do?

I have a GF 5200 128MB DDR TV DVI... And I have a Soney video Hi8 HandyCam Video Camera. Will I be able to capture the video on the tape to the PC with my card? And what equipment do i need and cables?

PLease...

sorry, the vid card only has DVI out, not in. DVI is the same thing as the DB-15 connector (CRT), only it runs digital whereas the CRT runs analog. Does the camera have firewire out on it? If not, your gonna need a vid out cable from the camera to a video in, which means you'll need to buy a 20-50 dollar card for that.

Close, but no cigars. DVI has completely different signaling, and, although the data is ostensibly the same, the representation is completely different.

I'm looking into that very question. I think the best card I have seen that offers video in/out along with capture capability, TIVO like operation, and HDTV output is the Radeon 9800 All in Wonder. I just saw it on NewEgg for about $335 or so. Kinda spendy for a video card, but I think it's one of the best cards out there right now. (And I am a LOOOONG time NVidia fan!) I think I'll end up buying it today. I can't say enough good things about NewEgg. They have always been on top of things, shipped my orders promptly, had the best prices and awesome customer support. Hope this helps.

Mark

There are plenty of cards with VIVO (video-in video-out) capability. No need to take one of the expensive cards with a TV tuner on.

The alternative is to use a dedicated PCI video-in card (about $30 from Leadtek) or a PCI TV card (from $50 depending on features). The latter always have video-in capability as well. Video-out will always be done by the graphics card, sound processing by the sound card.
