You just need to reconstruct your boot.ini file.

If you have a regular computer, the line the file contains is usually something like this->

[begin file boot.ini]

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

[end file boot.ini]

You should be able to put it back in by making a xp boot floppy, format a floppy in xp, put ntdetect.com, boot.ini and ntldr in the disk.

Can't you F8 at startup and select Last Known good config?
Or will that not work?

If he can't boot at all, he can't go into the safe mode menu.

When you boot with the wxp bootfloppy, it should (this is, if only boot.ini is missing) boot your computer just like normal.

When it has finished booting, you just copy the boot.ini from the floppy to your rootdrive.

The boot.ini looks like what I typed, if your system is in the first disk, first partition of the system, and there is no raid or anything like that.

You should, after putting the boot.ini to your rootdrive, assign it with proper attributes.
Like this->Start->run->cmd->cd\->attrib +r +s +h boot.ini
