How can I remove MSN messenger?

Windows XP Home (retail)

I've gone to add/remove windows components and removed Windows Messenger. It still pops up.

MSN seems to be running from a file that doesn't even exist.
open MSN >> open task manager >> select MSN >> right click and select "Go to Process "
Task Manager tells me that MSN is running from a file called "msmsgs.exe"
I went to Search and searched all local drives for that file name and there are no results.

How can I get rid of this damn thing? It's completely wasting almost 9mb of ram.

Send a message via AIM to Kc2iLq
Go to the run dialog box and paste this in:
Code:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Click OK and that should take care of it.

MSN Messenger and MS Messenger are 2 different progs.
Go to add/remove programs and you will find msn messenger.

vern- I have no idea what that means, but I get a similar error on every computer I've ever done this to. I don't think it's important, but you can do some further research if you'd like. Honestly though, I wouldn't pay it any mind.

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are two difference programs. If you are talking about MSN Messenger (which apparently you are, looking at the title of this thread) you just remove it from the add/remove section in the control panel. If you are refering to Windows Messenger (comes together with Windows XP) then its a bit more complicated. Take a look at this site where you find out how to delete it. There are two ways, one downloading a file that will delete it automatically, and the other one running the command already posted in this thread. The difference is that this file also changes the registry that has to be change if you use Outlook Express, or else it will take it a very long time to boot, because it doesnt find Windows Messenger, which they interact with each other. In the site it explains how to change that in the Windows registry manually. Both are easy methods, and you shouldnt experience any problems at all.

They actually are the same program. The MSN website refers to it as MSN Messenger, and it's refered to as Windows Messenger when it's a component of Windows. If you try to message somebody with Windows Messenger, it notifies you that you have an old version and opens an IE window to download MSN messenger.

I got a response to a post I made in another forum where a guy said to just delete the folder C:\program files\messenger
I did that and the problem is gone.

Kc2iLq's method would work too. Thanks for the help

You are totally wrong if you are telling us that MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are the same thing. And when using Windows Messenger it does NOT make you download the latest version of MSN Messenger (6.1) it makes you download the latest version of Windows Messenger (4.7) If it made you download version 6.1 of MSN Messenger, you were using MSN Messenger. And if you could delete the program by just deleting its folder, then again you were using MSN Messenger, because deleting Windows Messenger is much more complicated than that, because of the fact that it comes intergrated with Windows XP.

What is the first thing you see when you click this page
http://www.windowsmessenger.com/

When you click "download", what is the name of the 1 program you can download?
