K7 Triton K 600 running a ATI 9600 XT

Previously i ran on a pentium 4 1600 mhz processor with 512 mb of generic ram. Windows XP home with the current Cat drivers and DirectX 9.0b. I had no issues whatsoever and the card ran flawlessly.

Recently I upgraded to a Gigabyte Technologies, K7 Triton K 600 AMD athlon xp motherboard. It has an 8x AGP slot and ive upgraded the processor to a 2800+ AMD athlon XP. I also have XP home again with Current DirectX and the current and previous Cat drivers. Now I get VPU failures every time i try to play a game and the GFX get intense. The Vid Card temp stays around 30 degrees at all time. The failure occurs on both driver sets now.

Anyone know whats wrong?

Welcome to TechIMO
Did you reinstall the OS when you put in the new MB??

Also - did you install the VIA chipset drivers??

If you installed all the drivers on the CD, that should include the chipset AGP drivers. But you may want to go to the VIA website to get the latest version.

You may also want to try running the AGP bus at 4X instead of 8X. Sometimes it resolves those kind of problems. And it won't significantly impact your video performance.

If the problems continue, give us a full list of all your hardware. Also, a more complete discription of what happens when the machine crashes - what does it look like, sound like, error messages, etc.

OK

Ok i found my Board model on that site and it appears to only have downloads for what is on the CD as it is. Im downloading the 4 in 1 off the site to see if its different than the one on the CD.

not working

Ok, ive switched the agp slot to 4x, ive downloaded and installed the AGP drivers for my chipset from their website, ive used the auto update for the bios which came with the board. 4x is even more broken than 8x mode and the problem still occurs just as before with no remorse.
Any other ideas?

My next step would be to download & run Memtest86, to see if the RAM is throwing any errors.

Also be sure the vid card is seated properly - remove & reseat it just to make sure everythings making good contact.

Make sure your video card isn't sharing an irq with some other device.

A weak power supply can also cause stability problems - make sure you have a good quality power supply. An XP2800 requires a lot more power than a P4 1600. A minimum of 350 W is usually needed.

After that, you have to start eliminating possible conflicts with other hardware. Remove all the cards & drives that aren't necessary to play a game (I know its not fun to play without sound, but you have to eliminate the sound card as a possible problem)

Also - be sure to check the game(s) your playing for the availability of any pathches that might resolve compatibility problems with certain hardware.

These type of problems can be difficult to track down. I just spend several days tracking down a stability problem that happened after a vid card update. The solution turned out to be a combination of two things: Updating the Audigy sound card driver, and replacing a Netgear NIC that was either defective or incompatible with the 9800 Pro Vid Card. Unfortunately, its not always the obvious things that cause stability problems.
