More headaches grrr

Okay I'm need a really big bottle of aspirin this time.

For starters this compac won't shut down automatically. You select shutdown, it goes through everything and then restarts!
I'll be going over there tonight and I'll try to get into the bios and see if I can find anything there.

This machine is also doing something I've never heard of.

The user goes to one particular website and logs in just fine but when they try to do anyting it boots them back to the start page!!

Now for the strange part: Same user, same site, just on gaea's machine. No Problem

System specs:

Compac
1 gig processor
256 meg ram
OS is W2K
browser is IE6
dialup connection at 50k

My wifes machine
No brand name (I built it)
200 mhz pentium
256 meg ram
OS is W2K
browser is IE6
dsl connection

Whaaa????

Just an update

Found the login problem she is using some sort of dialup from Walmart!

Apparently it isn't fully compliant somewhere. When I minimized it and used IE6 instead everything worked fine.

Still haven't figured out the restart prob though.

If the compac used to shut down properly, then obviously something has taken place that interferes with the process.

I would look at, a corrupt sound file (turn off windows sounds), anything (programs) that have been added recently, especially since right before the shutdown problem began. New devices that required drivers...again, since just before the shutdown problems again. Trojan/virus/worm infection...clean the drive of such as that..run as many of the spybot cleaners that you can get...ad-ware, spybot, Pest Patrol etc.

Thanks for the tip about the sound files Bovon. I will check it.

This machine was doing the same thing with windows XP on it. I had to wipe it and install W2K because the owner had purchased it with no restore disk or copy of XP. What ever the shutdown prob is it had been going on for a while. The machine would barely function when it came to me. She had been shutting it down by turning off the power at the surge suppressor!!
I downloaded all the latest drivers I could find from compac before I even started, but I could easily have missed one ( I did make sure they where w2k compatible).

see here for where this all started.
