Media HL2 optimised

Is it true that Halflife2 will be optimised to run smoother and better with the Radeon cards, especially the 9800XT than with other models?

It is possible, but I doubt it would run like crap on other stuff. The only possibility I can think of is that, at the moment, ATI cards run DX9 better in general.

This is my machine:

AMD64bit3000+
Gigabyte Motherboard
Geil 1gigddr400 ram
Gexcube r9800XT 256mb
plenty of harddisk space.

I run Farcry and it runs ok, smooth with the odd slight slowdown wich can be a bit annoying if you really notice, does this mean Halflife2 wont run better than Farcry or quite the opposite?

Well you've got close to the highest end system you can get today, so I'd say you're alright.

I don't think HL2 is optimized per se, I think its just that ATI does DX9 better than nVidia.

Kind of the same thing with DOOM3 which runs better on nVidia cards. Its not that its necessarily optimized for nVidia, its just that nVidia tends to do OpenGL better than ATI.

I am doubting HL2 is gonna be tougher on your system then FarCry.... I don't know but FryCry is pretty intensive...

I am running a ATI 9500 Pro on my 3.2 Ghz system right now....

FarCry in 1024x768 at 32 with 2xAA runs pretty smooth.

You think because Hl2's levels are smaller that it might run much smoother than FarCry since farcry has to render an entire island before you play whereas hl2 has smaller levels? could that be?

i thoough half life would look and play more like a game from last year, seeing as thats were they were heading to release it for? I assumed stuff like farcry and doom3 would actually be harder on systems. Because they are newer.

So what do you guys reckon, a game with smaller(yet some big levels) will run more smoother than a game that loads an entire stage altogether sans FarCry, Stalker? are there any benefits to these types of techniques? any cons?

There are other things to take into acount on the way the game runs. To start with the game engine used, we have all seen this time and time again where one game runs so much better than another that has equal size maps.

level of detail and the amount of Polygons used.

I think an exsample for me was when I played Battlefield Vietnam and personaly was shocked at how bad the game looked and run.

Played Farcry and thought "now this is more like it"

If you read this about Doom III I would expect that this game will take the bigest hit on the GPU and that going by the currect games like farcry it will not run much better who knows we will have to wait and see.
