It would be better than a good gaming system, it would be an excellent gaming system.

IMO, Lite-On makes very loud drives though.
I hear Sony makes them a bit quieter than Lite-On for about the same price.

But it would be better to go with a better quality drive, If i had the choice between sony or Lite-on, I would pick Lite-On.

Now if you want both quite, and great performance, I would get an LG drive.

Also, for games with longer load times now(Batlefield Vietnam, Farcry, etc...) I would suggest getting a SATA drive if you can afford it.

Every LG drive I've ever owned has been a pile of junk. Well, an assembly of junk.

Lite-Ons haven't been much better, but they're cheap.

Every Sony I've owned has worked flawlessly.

Kind of funny since they're all probably made by Mitsumi.

But ya, that'll tear about pretty much any game I can think of.

Though, unless space is an issue, I would go with a 17" flat tube CRT monitor and use the money saved to pick up a 10K RPM SATA drive instead of the IDE drive. Reasons being that CRTs are still multiples better for gaming, and those SATA drives tear it up. In fact, with RAID SATA on those drives, people are getting 10 minute install times on XP. Think about that in terms of level loading and installing for games... Just a thought.

My grandpa has two lite-ons, and they work great. I've had 3 LGs, gave 2 of them away, and kept my 12x LG cd burner. At the time when it first came out, every review site said it was the fastest 12x cd-burner, somtimes burning at 13x. I havn't tried any of their newer drives, so they might have gotten worst this past year or two.

My LG was a 24x that couldn't write a disc at 24x to save its life. Couldn't write readable audio above 4x. And I have a decent system. Got a Lite-On DVD-R/W / CD-R/W combo now. Works well. No complaints about this drive. I've got a Lite-On 52x CD-ROM that has large and heated debates with the system about what disc it's actually reading. Very disappointed.

Micro Star is MSI. Very reputable. K7N is one of the top tier Socket A boards on the market, AFAIK.

IMO, the most important part of a system is the motherboard, after all it is what ties everything together. I'd go for a MSI, ASUS, or GIGABYTE motherboard.

As Biz said, a SATA drive will make a world of difference with loading times. I have one, and in BF1942 I'm never worse than the fifth person loaded in any map. It's incredible. Also, the RAM; I suggest getting dual channel RAM. Everything else looks very exceptional for a gaming machine in present time.
