Kids New build: Gigabyte 7S748 Compatibility?

First the facts: All new scratch build. GA-7S748, Barton 2500(Box);Kingston PC2700, (2) 512ea; Connect 3D radeon 7000; Micro Advantage DVD ROM & DVD+/- RW;1.44 Mitsumi; Promise 100 Ultra ATA controller card, (that came bundled with the HD); WD EIDE 200gb HD. Allied 400w. Everything jumpered to CS, HD into controller card, boot, memory test good, IDE sequence with DVD's into IDE1= no visable Primary Master, Primary slave= DVD-RW, no visable Secondaries, then primary disk fail, ok......, F1 to continue. Promise Technology Ultra 100TX2 boots, finds WD2000 (says 186GB Ultra DMA 5). IDE Master BUS Enabled....freeze up. end of story. Ok, turn off, move IDE cable to IDE2. mem test good, no visable Primary Master or slave (nothing plugged into it), Secondary Master= IDE DVD-ROM Slave= DVD-RW, Primary disk fail, F1 to continue, controller card sequence starts, finds HD, (still 186BG, Ultra DMA 5) IDE BUS Master Enabled. Freeze-up. Yes I went into the BIOS and set the boot sequence, floppy,HDD-0, CDROM. I also tried floppy, HDD-1CDROM. Ok, I even try to do it all over again, with the HD set to single or master. Still the same results IDE BUS Master Enabled. I even went as far as trying to boot with theWD Data Lifeguard Tools, (Install, diagnostics, Ultra ATA Management) went through diagnostic, no problem, I'm going to install 2000 Pro, so install utilities not needed, and the Promise Ultra100TX2 is detected (after I press F1)? What am I forgetting? I'm lost.

try it again without the controller....I dont think you will need the controller on that new of a motherboard.

Maybe someone else can chime in if I am wrong.

----

if you DO need the controller, I assume you would have to have a driver on a floppy and when you start the windows install it will ask you to press f6 if you have any mass storage drivers needed etc...which you DO..so you press f6 and it'll keep going then it will prompt you for the floppy with the drivers.

JP

also, you may want to spend some time here http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....r/grid_alp.php cuz you will need to know how to get the full 200g (or rather the full 186g) out of the drive etc

how to install xp (probably same for w2000)

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....YWdlPTE*&p_li=

1) Make sure your drive is identified on the boot up screen. If not, please refer to our knowledge base article on how to identify drives in your BIOS, Answer ID 54.

2) Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the system.

3)---->>>>>Note: If your drive is connected to a controller card, ATA/66/100 controller, or Raid controller, you may need to press the F6 key to load the driver for the controller before XP can find a drive to install to. See Answer ID 127 for more information.

4) Once at the partitioning option screen create the partition size you want by pressing C. If you are formatting using FAT32, each partition cannot be larger than 32GB. For more information about this limitation, please see Microsoft Article 184006.

If you are formatting using NTFS, there is no size limit on partitions. After the partition(s) have been created and formatted, continue with the Windows XP installation.
