win 98 prob.

Hi
Just done a virus scan on a 98 machine, found 10 infected files...deleted them..and rebooted.
Now whenever I try to open any apps...I get this message:
"windows cannot find imks" and giving me the option to locate it.
Don't know where it is ( or should be ).
Maybe I should take more notice of what I del next time :/
Anyways..any idea what I can do to restore it?..can't find any reference to it anwhere on google etc.
many thanks,
steve

next time write down the names of all the files, lol..that is what I always do in case of problems.

tings to try

1) run "sfc" from the run box....choose "scan for altered files"..it will scan and hopefully find some messed up files..it will find "setupx.dll" but just ignore that one....if it finds anything else you can restore it from the windows cd.

2) run windows setup again from within windows..put the cd in and either it will start itself or go to my computer, "open" the cd and click on "setup"

3) run "dr watson"..a little icon will appear in the lower right corner near the clock...then click on an app and try to open it...then either dr watson will tell you something or you can double click on dr watson icon and see if it tells you anything

Damn...none of those things worked, they all asked for the same thing to run...imks !!, even the 98 setup :/
If I reinstall 98 ( through dos )...will I keep all my installed programmes?

Thanks,
Steve

yes, you can just reinstall thru dos..by booting from a floppy for instance....or even booting from the windows98 disk

all you have to do is make sure you dont format!!!!

---

one possibility is that you could try restoring to an earlier version of the registry, although that would put the viruses back probably, lol

boot to dos...run "scanreg /restore"...it will show you some dates which you could restore to....maybe you could restore back to before you deleted the files....I dont know what that would accomplish unless you then removed the viruses more carefully or at least noticed the exact names of the files you removed etc.

Did you check for any weird startup programs or executables that might be making your system do that?

Run msconfig from the Run menu and check the startup tab.

what about booting to safe mode??

in safe mode see if you can run msconfig and see if anything weird is in there...or you could uncheck everything except "systray" and "explorer"..reboot, and see what happens
