dos - subsystem errors on win xp startup. Pls help.

I honestly have no idea what I did to make this happen.....and its been going on for about a week.

OS: win xp/pro

p4b 2.66/1024 pc 2700/ Gigabyte MB/9800 pro.

On startup/restart I get the following error message.

" 16 bit msdos subsystem
c:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\STARTM~1\programs\startup\win logon.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:053d IP:01 a5 OP:63 73 2e 67 69 Choose close to terminate the application."

I then have the option to "close" or "ignore"

I usually close it and things are fine......but any idea how to fix it?
Thanks.

you seam to have a dos based program set to run at start-up and the system don't like it.
remove what ever that program is or remove it from the start-up menue

Or, if that doesn't remove it, run MSConfig from the run dialog, select 'selective startup', click the start up tab, and uncheck any suspicious sounding progs (I'm a believer in unchecking all of them and fixing it if something doesn't work, but you may not want to disable some of them). By the way, the critical things needed to boot XP aren't in that list.
