trouble installing windows 2000 pro

i have had dell notebooks in the past and have recently switched to toshiba tecra products instead. my dell came with a windows 2000 pro cd rom.

now when i want to install it on my toshiba tecra it gets almost to the install point and then a message flashes that this computer is not a dell and will not let me get any further.

is there a work around for this

no, there is no work around for that, it is illegle to use the same O/s on two computers.
I you sold the dell, the cd must go with it, as it is regestered to that one computer.
the cd is designed for that one computer and will not work on any other system.
you need to buy a new O/S to install it on the new laptop.
the new laptop should have came with a set of cd's designed for it.
bottom line is, you cannot do what your trying to do.

incorrect

i still have the dell. it has died.
the os is on only one machine if i can get it to work on the toshiba.

the tecra came with win98se - hence my desire to upgrade it.

then your only choice it to buy a w2k upgrade or better yet a xp-home upgrade, you cannot use the dell cd, it won't work as you found out.

I believe it would be "legal" to get another WIN2000 Pro installation disk and use the CoA code off of the original Dell. You've paid for an OS that is not being used. If that serial number works, you're good to go.

Otherwise, you are entering a grey area...
