Kids Was I Hacked?

I don't like sounding like a paranoid freak, but I think I was hacked into. I went to play an episode of an anime series I have stored on my computer and when i checked it was gone. Along with some movies and "other" videos. I checked my disc volume and I have way more free space on my hdd than i should.

The only programs i had running were BCDC++ and UDagent. I also ran virus checker and came up with nothing. was this a hack job?? and if so, what type of person just deletes non important files from someone else computer?

no firewall, only the built in one in XP Pro and i know that isn't a reall one. This isn't the biggest deal in the world to me, I'm just curious. There is nothing on my computer of dire importance that i don't have Backed up.

I doubt you were hacked.

The typical way that people are "hacked" is via a trojan horse, and a virus scan would have detected any common trojan. If you're careful about what files you accept/download - the risk of infection is low.

Maybe run ZoneAlarm for a couple weeks and see if anything interesting comes up?

lol. Oh gawd Brandon. Listen to what you're saying. 1,800 interesting things will come up. But none of them will be very important.

Maybe you could try looking in the Event Viewer to see if anything strange went on during the suspected time (like a remote machine connecting or whatever).

Get spyware cleaners such as Ad-Aware and Spybot together with a spyware preventer such as SpywareBlaster. Also download Zone Alarm firewall and get your computer protected.

Gimme a break...

He never specified an OS. When I ran ZoneAlarm under Windows 98SE back in the day - I never noticed anything unusual or unidentifiable come up. But then again, he could be running a spyware/adware infested 2000/XP system... like you.

While we're on the topic - I think that noticing a few files missing isn't cause for concern in the first place. God knows stuff goes "missing" off my hard drive all the time. I just know by now that I obviously deleted it a while ago, and was either in some sort of ecstacy-induced trance or just plain can't remember doing it.

Well I suspect all the files that you guys are losing are somehow making their way to my hd 'cause I'm constantly low on space and often finding crap that makes me wonder "where'd that come from? I don't remember saving that."

I'm not just missing small files here. I'm talking I gained 10G of space from one moment to the next without me hitting the Delete key.

Out how do i check the event viewer?
