the opteron 246 is meant to be used in a dual cpu configuration. so unless you're planning to buy two cpus, you should really be looking at the 146 instead...you'd save some money as well. IMO, the opteron is really a dual cpu platform chip, if you never plan to add a second cpu, it really doesn't make sense to go that route.

frankly, an amd64 3000+ or 3200+ would be the best bang for the buck. the FX would be faster but it's a lot more money.
