Opteron is a server chip, you don't want it. FX is AMD's elite chip, and will run you 700 bucks. Yeah, its OC'able.

IMO, save yourself some money and get an Athlon64 on Socket 754.

Opterons aren't necessairly for servers, it could be used as a workstation with the 1xx chips.

Well, how much memory do you really want to run? Do however, keep in mind that if you plan on buying a socket-940 based system, then you MUST use Registered memory. And in the cases of some boards, ECC may be required.

Also, just how much memory are you going to need to put into this beast you're designing? And the socket-940 boards out there with any more than 4 DIMM slots are probably for dual-processor workstation/server boards. That means opteron only. And the FX is virtually identical to the Opteron processors.
