Can I get my files back?

In an attempt to remove linux from my Inspiron 8200, I tried to use the "fixmbr" command from the recovery console on the windows xp cd. This got rid of linux, but also removed access to my windows partition. Is there any way i can re-activate my partitions or get my data back??

thanks

hmmm fixmbr doesnt delete partitions... it only takes care of the boot record I belive...

did you have windoes installed?

I don't think anything got deleted...

Maybe getting a boot loader like grub... or soemthing... so that you can access the partitions..

Your Windows partition should still be there. It might be a matter of just making it the active partition. You can do this in fdisk but be careful not to delete the partition.

and if all else fails there are a couple programs that will let you read ntfs files.

anyone know of a good program that will recover ntfs files from my hard drive?? Fdisk shows that there are no partitions, i rewrote the mbr, so it makes it look like the partitions are gone. The data must still be there though.

This just happened to me with a desktop HDD. I couldn't access the files, so I connected it as a slave to another working computer and accessed/transferred what I needed. Then wiped/reinstalled XP an was all set.

I know this might be tougher to do with a laptop HDD, but it should work.

ya, well i recovered my partitions, and i can see that my data is there through dos. It won't boot though, it says, "Error trying to load operating system" so I am going to grab a version of knoppix or make that bootable windows cd to get my files off.
thanks for the help guys
