2 boxes sharing DSL, files, printer help?

Fellow Members:

I'm opening new office. Secretary using laptop with NIC (Win98se), I'm using desktop with NIC (Win2KPro).

Very simply, would someone kindly describe what to purchase to share DSL, files, printer between above described desktop & laptop?

Not interested in wireless network. I have configured 2 computers sharing DSL only on 4-port Linksys router.

I like Linksys routers (that's all I've ever tried! ) but am open to suggestions. If this is too complicated to descrbe here, can someone turn me onto decent networking "how to" site?

Thanks!

Brangwen

generally speaking its simply as easy and putting both the computers in the same workgroup and enabling file and print sharing.
In win98 right click on "network nieghborhood" and look for computer identity of something like that, and then change "Workgroup"

On the win2k machine its about the same, I dont have either of those OS's right in front of me so I cant remember all the exact clicks to make.

To share files, simply right click on the folder and select "sharing".
likewise for the printer on the computer its connected to.

These items should show up in the network nieghborhood of the other cpu

VHockey86:

How about the cabling and router? Should the cable be cross-over vs straight through?

Thanks!

you can use all straight/patch cable (in most cases)

just connect DSL modem to WAN port of linksys router, and the comps to the LAN ports of the router.

Although any dsl modem ive ever setup just used patch from modem to WAN port, I've heard of ones where a crossover is neccesary. If you use the cable that comes with the dsl modem you should be ok

As for a router... this is about the most popular entry level router from linksys

For what you intend to do it will work fine.
