If you don't buy a monitor with it, it should be fairly easy to get a complete system for $700.
Try http://www.newegg.com for adding up component prices.
I think 9800 pros are around $210, and I'd suggest getting an Athlon XP 2500+ (about $80), and an Asus A7N8X-E deluxe motherboard, which has dual integrated LAN, one of them is a gigabit.

Mobo: Asus A7n8X - $114
Cpu : 2500 + barton (overclock it to 3200) - $80
Ram : 1 gig (2 x 512) of OCZ Pc-3200 - $212
graphics card : SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800PRO - $210
total = $616 + shipping (I think its only like $5 for the Mobo and the other get free shipping)
All prices from newegg.
That'd an awesome gaming system.

hmm you need a case and drives too Exsus
mabey go with only 512 of crucial/geil or somethin cheap that should knock it down to about 500 the n around 60 or a case/PSU and $80 or so for a harddrive then you have up to $60 fo optical drives...or to stay on the lower end of the budget you could get a 9600 XT or mabey a cheaper mobo
shoot i forgot
do you need an os?
and oh yah a monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers?

what to buy
Why not build a nice p3/733, and take the rest of the budget money and party for a month, or buy a motorcycle, or elcheapo car, or even...heaven forbid, put rest in bank...I have a p4/2400, but my p3/733 works better and is my daily computer while the p4 sits idle.

I have a p3 right now and need something faster....
I don't need an OS, bought 2 copies but the other PC took a poop and no longer works...
Don't need the Monitor and I think I could get the mouse/keyboard wireless for $40 from Target (Yeah, I'm a cheap boy)
I'm feeling a Gig of Ram but I do need a case....Hhhmmm?
As for parting for a month, I'm a Dad and My wife doesn't even appreciate me being away from the house for too long so that's out.

From Newegg
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
AMD XP2500+ Barton (333Mhz)
512MB Kingston HyperX PC2700, CAS 2-2-2-5
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Western Digital 40GB, 8MB Hard Drive
Lite On 16X DVD Drive
Antec Super Mid-Tower "SLK3700AMB" w/350 Watt P/S
To your door for $703.48.
I can vouch personally for the awesomeness of said system. Except I've only got a 9500 Pro and it still eats anything I throw at it. If you have to skimp on something, skimp on the case. There were cheaper ones, I just grabbed one that was on sale and looks decent.

Personally, I'd opt for more ram, and skimp a little on the video card--maybe go for a 9600. When you can rustle up a bit more money, then you can always upgrade. Also, you may need more than 40GB of hard drive space; 40 gigs goes very quickly. Then again, if you need more space, you can always upgrade when the money is there.

I'd suggest Abit NF7-S as an alternative to the A7N8X Deluxe, and you might want to go with pc3200 ram.

On that budget, PC3200 is no good. Gotta save money anywhere you can, and thats one spot. Getting 1GB of it is better than 512 of PC3200.
