Three questions...

Hi all,

I got three questions for you all as it says.

1. In another forum there are posters that have "animated gifs" for their avatars. For some reason they just stop moving in certain instances maybe one or two will move and then the next time I go into a thread it won't be moving. It's just irritating and I'm hoping it's not a sign of a bigger problem in my computer. Anyone know what's going on? I've done everything I can think of... check internet settings, defrag, do a reg clean, clean cookies and temp folder. I'm running win xp home fyi.

2. So far it seems like I have a problem only when playing music through the CD rom but I think the lens is dirty because the music cd is choppy but if I stick it in another cd player it plays fine. I've cleaned it with a cd cleaner you can buy at fry's but it didn't seem to help? What's next?

3. I've talked about noisy fans before but I was wondering if where to get fan lube because it seem pretty specialized. This time it's not for my laptop fans but for my laptop cooler. It's working ok but it's to prepare for when it does start making noises.

Thanks for your help,

Nick

Hey Nick,

Here's my shot at #2...

Have you checked in device manager to make sure you're IDE for the rom is in DMA mode (if in PIO mode it will be choppy).

Good luck.

Would it make a difference if I told you that my computer is a laptop? I haven't messed with that dma mode too.

Did you check on the DMA mode, because sometimes you can (inadvertantly) or more likely Windows can set itself back to PIO mode.

Also, I have an Inspiron 5100, and it runs a lot smoother now that I've wiped/reinstalled XP. All the Dell crap slows it down...

Send a message via ICQ to JohnE.
I'll take a crack at #1

Do you happen to have Norton Internet Security Firewall installed? With it's ad-blocking feature there's a setting to block or permit animated gifs. You can make block or permit the global default or configure it for individual sites.

Left, I'll check the dma mode then, I think a wipe is definitely in order just not right now during school at least.

John, I have Zone Alarm pro right now and it does have adblocking and cookies setting but I don't think it' has anything about blocking animated gifs?

If anyone has any added info let me know thanks guys,

Nick
