CD-RW whinning sound...

I have a Sony burner that that when I put in a CD (whether it be a Audio CD, CD-R or CD-RW), it makes a whinning sound as it reads or writes. What could this mean?

Does it sound abnormal?
A lot of burners are just loud and make strange noises.

My Lite-On 52x CD-RW sounds like a 747 when it burns/reads.

Sounds really abnormal. It never used to do that. I have a Lite-on 48x and your right, it is loud, but this is way louder. It even makes the face of the case vibrate a little.

Hmm...
Make sure all your screws are tight into the drive bay.

Not much you can do unless you RMA it.

All the screws are tight. It's pretty old, about 3-4yrs old. I don't think it under warranty anymore, and I dont think its worth shipping. Prolly will just pick up a dual layer dvd burner in a couple of months when they come out. As long as this one doesn't die anytime soon.

You can get a new one for around $30 on NewEgg.

Beige Sony 52x = http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...106-815&depa=1 - $28

Black Sony 52x = http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...106-816&depa=1 = $33

After 3-4 years, it's time to upgrade.

I dont think its worth it. It's not that important right now. I just wanted to know if its some sort of warning sign that the drive is gonna die. Like I said, I think I'll just wait until the new dual layer dvd burners come out and pick one of them up, as they burn cds as well.

BTW, thanks for the links.

It could definetely be a warning sign if it just acted up.
From the years of usage the stuff wears down.

Sounds like a bearing for the rotation of the disk is wearing and is now off balance which would cause the odd vibration.
I'd just bite the bullet so to speak and get a new one. If you are looking for something to just tie you over for a DVD burner a cheapo will work
