A copmuter build suggestions

My parents have been complaining lately about they not being able to use the computer and wanted to buy a cheap one for themselves which i immediatly told them not to. They need a computer for basic word internet and thats basically it. It also need to be cheap. I figured id go with and AMD XP proc and maybe 512 if not 256 mb ram onboard video/audio 20gb hard drive. They would also like the case to be relatively small. Any suggestions on any of the stuff i mentioned would be great. What do u think i should do about an OS... XP Home/Pro....2000 i dunno. Any suggestions would be great. thanks again

i dunno it might not fit the budget but mabey one of those tiny cases if not then a micro atx shold be good enough

for that i would go with xp home

fora cpu a 2500

and i think you can usually get a 40gig hard drive cheaper than a 20...and oh yah get your ram fast before the prices shoot up sommore

For that usage, I'd recommend searching for off-lease (used) corporate machines. Around here, I've been seeing a fair number of Dell's "GX" series machines going for two or three hundred. Those are a bit slower than you're thinking of, but they're hi quality, reliable, and quiet. I've got one at work, and another right here. The last batch I saw had P3-900's, 128mb, 20gig, CDRW, W2K.
When we need machines at work, these are what I recommend - I've yet to have one fail!
For the type usage you're describing, I simply cannot tell any difference between the 600mhz GX-110 and my decked-out Athlon 2400!!
If you've no source local, try CompGeeks.com
